Connecting Drummond Cove to Sunset Beach via a shared path got one step closer following the extension of the existing path from Sail Boulevard to Corallina Quays.
With the assistance of State Government funding from the Department of Transport’s Regional Bicycle Network Program, the City of Greater Geraldton recently constructed a 500m long 2.5m wide off-road shared path along Chapman Road to the most northern street in Sunset Beach.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said a path connecting Drummond Cove to the rest of the City is a top priority in the Geraldton 2050 Cycling Strategy.
“In 2017 the City asked the community how we could improve our cycling network and the overwhelming, top priority of respondents to the Cycling in the City Survey, was to build a 4km long bike path between Drummond Cove and Sunset Beach,” he said.
“The completion of this half kilometre long stretch is the first step towards achieving this lengthy goal.
“The construction of the final 3.5kms could take place earlier than we’ve expected with the Labor Government promising to fund the project if they were re-elected.
“We look forward to working with the State Government to fulfil the community’s goal.”
Sunset Beach Community Group Secretary Heike Witt said the group strongly supported the shared path which is a top cycling priority for their community.
“The path extension enables community members living at the northern end of the suburb to safely access the shops at Glenfield, school bus stops and the Chapman River Regional Park with all its cycling facilities at Spalding Park,” she said.
“We thank everyone involved who got this project happening.”
Mayor Van Styn also recognised the State Government’s key role in the project.
“Thanks to the Department of Transport’s financial support, recreation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities continues to grow,” he said.
“It is fantastic to see our community getting more active and utilising the shared path.”
The construction of the shared path was undertaken by local contractors Red Cat Holdings and Catwest Road Services. The $200,000 project was 50 percent funded by the Department of Transport.
