Alexander Park and the Greenough Oval will soon come under new light with the installation of new sports lighting towers set to begin in early November.
Following an audit review of all City region sporting tower floodlighting conducted in early 2018, two towers at Alexander Park and one tower at Greenough Oval were removed to ensure community safety and replacement of the infrastructure which had reached its end of life was included in the 2018/19 Renewals Budget.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the decision to replace the towers reflected Council’s ongoing support of the City’s strong sporting culture.
“Sports play a huge role in Geraldton’s identity and lifestyle and the football and soccer clubs using these two facilities contribute to that culture,” he said.
“With more and more clubs opting to train at night to avoid the summer heat adequate floodlighting plays a critical role in the health and safety of players.”
“It also enables clubs to potentially attract regional and state wide sporting events to the City which also benefits the local economy.”
Elite Electrical Contracting was recently awarded the $1.1 million contract to install six, 30m tall light towers at Alexander Park and four, 30m tall light towers at the Greenough Oval.
Works at Alexander park are scheduled to begin on 8 November 2018 whilst works at the Greenough Oval on 26 November 2018. The estimated date of completion for both projects is the beginning of March 2019.
