More than $21 million will be spent on asset renewals in the next financial year as the City of Greater Geraldton announces the 2017/18 Budget.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said this record spend would ensure legacy projects are completed whilst providing an important boost to the local economy.

“The City owns assets valued at more than $1 billion and over the next 12 months we will be spending $21.27 million to continue to address the backlog of asset renewals,” he said.

“Some of the renewals will be similar to recent road renewal works on Fifth Street in Wonthella and the renewal of the Augustus Street footpath in Beachlands.

“These projects are excellent examples of works that were scoped out and designed in-house, project managed by City staff with local contractors delivering on ground works.”

Other infrastructure renewals include footpaths renewals such as Johnston Street, resealing roads, carparks and bridges, refurbishing aged buildings and facilities and replacing amenities in parks and public open spaces.

“The 2017/18 Budget concentrates on completing a wide range of renewal projects, some of which have been ongoing, to ensure community infrastructure can be used and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Van Styn said.
