Geraldton City RSL Sub Branch and the City of Greater Geraldton are encouraging members of the community to remember the fallen differently this weekend.
With the COVID-19 health crisis altering much around the globe, pre-recorded service elements will be accessible through Facebook so that ANZAC Day can be honoured from home.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged the community to come together online.
“ANZAC Day will certainly be different this year but the importance of paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom is still very much the same,” he said.
“I’m really pleased that we have been able to work with the Geraldton City RSL Sub Branch to ensure service elements still go ahead but adapted for online use.
“Whilst we can’t come together physically we can in spirit to remember those men and women who gave so much.”
Geraldton City RSL Sub Branch President Barry Stinson looked forward to remembering the fallen with many online.
“As we approach the very first ANZAC Day since WWII without the traditional Dawn Service, we hope the community will join us online in honouring those who served and still serve today,” he said.
“We invite you to stand at the end of your driveway at 6am for the digital ANZAC Day Dawn Service accessible through the City’s Facebook page.
“Afterwards you can fire up the barbecue for a feed of bacon, eggs, sausages plus a mug of tea or coffee to toast the fallen and our older Diggers.”
Members of the community can follow the nation-wide movement and stand at the end of their driveway with a candle at 6am. At this time people will be able to watch Geraldton City Band’s Craig Bassett play The Last Post on Facebook.
The ANZAC Day videos will be available to watch and pay respects on Saturday 25 April via the City of Greater Geraldton’s Facebook page.
Videos include an address from Geraldton City RSL Sub Branch President Barry Stinson, Warren Nathan and the Last Post played by Craig Bassett.
Geraldton Regional Library also have a variety of online activities in the lead up to ANZAC Day including Story Time.
