Access to Spalding Park and its cycling facilities from the east side of the North West Coastal Highway is safer and easier following the completion of a shared path leading to the Chapman River bridge and pedestrian underpass.
With the assistance of State Government funding from the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program, the City of Greater Geraldton recently constructed a 680m long off-road shared path from Green Street to the south side of the Chapman River and formalised the bridge underpass to make it fully accessible.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said providing safe access to Spalding Park’s popular facilities for people who live on the east side of the highway is paramount.
“Since the completion of the walking and bike riding facilities along with upgrades to the toilet block and playground equipment in Spalding Park the number of community members visiting the area has dramatically increased,” he said.
“It is fantastic to see our community getting more active and utilising these popular facilities.
“I’d like to thank to Department of Transport for supporting the project which enables people of all ages who want to walk, or ride to Spalding Park with a safe way to cross the busy highway.”
Geraldton Mountain Bike Club President Paul Spackman is pleased to see Spalding Park and the Chapman River Regional Park trails are now even more accessible to people riding bikes.
“It’s really great to see this shared path finally complete and the formalisation of the underpass,” he said.
“It gives all people easy and safe access to ride on some of the best cycling facilities north of Perth. More people can now enjoy the wonder of the Chapman River Park.”
The construction of the shared path was undertaken with a combination of City depot staff and contractors. The $230,000 project was 50% funded by the DoT Bicycle Network Grants Program.
