Night time training and competitions at the Woorree Park BMX track will be brighter from now on following the installation of new LED floodlighting at the venue.
The $86,270 project that involved the replacement of metal halide floodlighting and with three new poles and energy efficient LED lights was funded in part with the State Government’s Community Sporting and Recreational Facilities Fund (CSRFF) contributing $20,973 towards the upgrade.
The CSRFF grants are offered as a one-third funding contribution from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) with the remaining two-thirds coming from the City of Greater Geraldton and the sporting group.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said for more than a decade local sporting clubs have been improving their infrastructure with the assistance of the State’s CSRFF grants.
“For more than ten years Council has been supporting clubs who work hard to raise funds to make improvements to their facilities,” he said.
“This much needed upgrade will enable BMX Club members to continue to train in the evenings during the summer months when the temperatures are cooler.
“The new lighting will also enable the club to continue to host state competitions whilst making it eligible for national competitions as well.”
BMX Club President Fleur Bishop said the new lighting is a game changer for the club.
“The new lighting has changed the way we can use the track facilities and opened up new opportunities for the club,” she said.
“The lighting is fantastic and offers a much higher safety and visibility level for riders and officials.
“A huge thank you to the City, sporting, parks and facilities staff and the DLGSC for making the new track lighting a reality. We are excited to start the 2021 season.”
Any sporting club that wants to increase participation in their particular sport or recreation by providing quality, sustainable facilities can apply to the CSRFF grant program.
