At tonight’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, the City of Greater Geraldton Budget 2024/25 was adopted which keeps rate rises low and welcomes new projects to enhance the region.
Residents will see an average increase to their rate notices of 3.9% applied throughout the locality.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the new Budget helped combat the cost of living and still delivered for the community.
“It is no secret that cost of living pressures continue to mount. Life is getting more challenging which is why we have endorsed a Budget that keeps our residents’ rate increases as manageable as possible,” he said.
“Since the City changed its approach to financial planning in 2013, it has strived to eliminate significant revenue raising shocks to the community which is evident and reflected by the average annual increase to residential rates over the last 11 years being under 2.5%.
“Income derived from rates forms the core of how the City operates and allows us to deliver on what the community wants, supports local businesses and contractors with a range of work opportunities and enables us to plan for the future.
“I am delighted to see some significant projects commencing in the new financial year along with essential renewal works to ensure Greater Geraldton remains a vibrant place to live,” added Mayor Clune.
Resheeting rural roads, upgrading urban roads and footpaths remain a priority with $14.6 million committed.
Significant steps towards achieving the City’s Net Zero Corporate Climate Change Mitigation Plan will be undertaken with gas flaring at Meru set to reduce the Landfill’s carbon emissions by up to 50%. This budget also funds the Geraldton Airport Microgrid Project which will not only reduce City’s carbon footprint, but increase the Geraldton Airport, City Depot and SES Centre’s resilience when power outages occur.
Improving connectivity and liveability in Mullewa with the widening of the Mingenew – Mullewa Road as well as upgrades to the Doc Docherty Pool, Recreation Grounds and Town Hall also form part of the Budget.
All of the projects planned for the new financial year are priorities outlined in the City’s Corporate Business Plan and Strategic Community Plan. They span the entire locality including Geraldton, Greenough, Walkaway and Mullewa.
