At tonight’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, the City of Greater Geraldton Budget 2023/24 was adopted which keeps rate rises low and welcomes new projects set to enrich the community.
Residents will see an average increase of $1.63 per week to their rates notices as 3% is applied throughout the locality.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new Budget helped drive down the cost of living yet still delivered community aspirations.
“We understand everyday living expenses are rising. Things are getting more challenging, which is why we have endorsed this Budget that keeps our residents’ rate increases low,” he said.
“The income from rates is a core part of how we operate and deliver on what the community wants. And because of sound financial management, we’re able to keep rate increases less than half the rate of inflation.
“I’m pleased to see some major projects commence in the new financial year along with key renewal works to ensure Greater Geraldton remains a thriving regional city.
“We pride ourselves on listening to our residents and making objectives set out in the Strategic Community Plan happen, and this is what we’re continuing to do come 1 July and beyond,” he added.
Resheeting rural roads, upgrading urban roads and footpaths remain a priority with $13.2 million committed.
Improving liveability in Mullewa with refurbishments to buildings, trails as well as open spaces has $1.8 million allocated, and upgrades to sporting facilities including the Geraldton Aquarena along with Mullewa’s Doc Docherty Pool is set to receive $2.3 million.
Community will continue to reap the rewards with a community chest of $500,000 and city centre activation and cruise ship welcome hubs receiving $220,000.
“In the 2023/24 financial year, we will also commence development of a solar microgrid at the Geraldton Airport and undertake accessibility and inclusion improvements at the Queens Park Theatre,” continued Mayor Van Styn.
“Boaties and water sports enthusiasts will be treated to an upgraded boat ramp and jetty at Francis Street. Beautifying open spaces with revegetation, playgrounds and irrigation works is also a key component.
“We are doing a lot with a modest Budget and keeping the community top of mind with each project.”
All of the projects planned for the new financial year are priorities outlined in the City’s Corporate Business Plan and Strategic Community Plan. They span the entire locality including Geraldton, Greenough, Walkaway and Mullewa.
