City of Greater Geraldton Council has awarded local contractor Red Dust Holdings the tender to build the highly anticipated roundabout at the intersection of Durlacher and Maitland Streets.
Works to transform the T-section, an identified Black Spot and one of the busiest in the CBD, are slated to begin the first week in October.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said construction of the much needed roundabout will be a game changer for the area.
“More than 9000 vehicles travel through this intersection every day,” he said.
“Anyone driving in the vicinity of this intersection at peak hour traffic during school pick-up and drop-off times knows firsthand how quickly traffic backs up leading to real safety concerns for people trying to cross Maitland Street.”
Preliminary works for the construction of the roundabout include utility services relocations and the removal of six small trees and five large Norfolk Pine trees.
Mayor Van Styn said the City will be offsetting the removal of trees.
“When it comes to trees, the City’s preference is to maintain and keep trees where they are,” he said.
“However, the removal of these trees are necessary to improve traffic safety at the intersection including safe intersection sight distance, bicycle and pedestrian connectivity and to improve the general traffic operation of the intersection.
“The City will be offsetting the removal of the trees by planting a significant number of trees in the Cathedral Avenue Upgrade project."
Construction of the $1.83 million roundabout is jointly funded with the State Government Black Spot Program contributing $622,000 towards the project. The estimated date of completion is late December 2020.
