Local construction company Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets has secured an opportunity to build seven new single-storey homes following Council’s commitment to attracting and retaining key services for the Midwest.
Located on McAleer and Willcock Drive, the parcels of land have previously gone to auction and did not sell leaving them underutilised since 2021.
The $4.7 million project consists of a $3.1 million investment from the City along with $1.6 million from the State Government and is projected to generate around $7.8 million in revenue to the City over the next 12 years.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said Council is taking a leadership stance.
“Australia is in a national housing crisis, and we are feeling those effects locally. We are responding to the needs of our community and attracting key services to the region by activating this land,” he said.
“In turn this will relieve pressure on the housing market, allowing more local families to purchase or rent homes.
“This project also provides another income stream to help mitigate future rate rises for residents and paves the way for the professions that provide the services needed by our community.
“The build of these seven single-storey houses supports the local economy and helps create jobs in our community,” finished Mayor Clune.
Once built, the State Government’s Government Regional Officer Housing program will take possession of the homes under a 10-year lease agreement.
The homes may be allocated to police officers, health professionals or teachers.
Construction of the homes will commence this year.
