The rainy season may not be over yet, but the City of Greater Geraldton are reminding residents that it's time to start getting their properties ready for the coming bushfire season.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said works done now could prevent damage to properties and save lives.
“Together, as a community, we must be vigilant and prepare for the upcoming bushfire season. Our commitment to safety, proactive planning and swift action will ensure we are ready to protect our homes and loved ones,” he said.
“The first step should be to clear your property of all vegetation and other combustible materials at least three meters away from any buildings, as well as to trim back trees and shrubs to reduce their density.
“The Annual Firebreak Notices that are sent out with Rates Notices specify the specific fire safety precautions property owners must take, depending on the size of their property.
"Taking action right now can significantly reduce the likelihood that a destructive bush fire will destroy your house or even take your life,” he added.
The deadline to have properties prepared is Saturday 4 October, with firebreak inspections beginning after this date. Non-compliant properties may be fined $250.
