Improving community safety was an important criteria the City used when developing the Capital Works Plan and choosing renewal projects for the 2017/18 Budget.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the construction of new footpaths, the renewal of older paths and the installation of traffic calming devices would improve community well-being.
“In the new financial year the City has budgeted more than $500,000 to construct 1770m of new footpaths which will greatly improve the safety of people walking or riding a bicycle along busy roads,” he said.
“Johnston Street and Eastern Road are popular routes people use to access the City centre so footpaths along these streets stretching from the North West Coastal Highway to Brede Street and Caprice Road respectively will make it much safer for everyone.
“The City is also on track to renewing all the old dilapidated footpaths in the CBD by renewing footpaths along roads such as Sanford, Durlacher and Shenton Streets as well as Anzac Terrace and George Road.
“These works, which will see more than 2845m of aged footpaths renewed, have been allocated just over $900,000 in the 2017/18 Budget,” Mayor Van Styn added.
Traffic calming devices will also be installed in Sunset Beach to slow down motorists in the suburb.
“Community consultation and investigation has indicated there are a number of locations in Sunset Beach where the installation of traffic calming devices may slow down drivers,” Mayor Van Styn said.
“The City will be undertaking a staged approach on this project which involves installing six median islands on Swan Drive this financial year at a cost of $40,000 and $100,000 in the 2017/18 Budget for additional devices.
“The City is currently working with the local community to determine the exact locations of the devices.”
