The City of Greater Geraldton is seeking feedback on a draft concept masterplan to upgrade the aged Youth Precinct on the Foreshore that features exciting activities for young people.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said extensive community engagement on the project has resulted in a masterplan that reflects the wants and needs of young people and their families.
“In the past five months we’ve engaged with residents through a community survey and in a series of workshops with youth service providers and more than 60 student leaders from local high schools regarding the Youth Precinct,” he said.
“The 450 respondents to the survey, in which more than 70% were young people under the age of 25, helped us understand how the Youth Precinct is used and more importantly, how the space could be improved.
“What we heard was more shade and shelter from the wind is needed and young people want the precinct to include exciting activities such as a zipline, skate/scoot facilities, trampolines and climbing equipment, along with quieter spaces where they can socialise such as big swings, covered tables and benches, hang out areas and shade trees.”
“Thanks to student involvement in the co-design process, we have a draft concept masterplan that reflects the aspirations of young people and now we want to know what the broader community thinks about the design.”
Separate to the Youth Precinct Upgrade, the City is also seeking feedback on the opportunity to reactivate a second site on the Foreshore.
Interest in expanding recreational facilities to other areas on the Foreshore was sparked during the Youth Precinct engagement process which prompted an investigation into the possibility. Following reviews of existing strategies, including the City Centre Revitalisation Plan, the area between the Dome Café and Cathedral Avenue was identified as a potential site.
“Student leaders and project stakeholders were asked to consider the area adjacent to the Dome for reactivation and based on their feedback a concept design for this second site that includes large scale covered nest swings, hang out spaces and a multifunctional space designed for activities and performances was developed,” Mayor Clune added.
“Although the potential development of this site is not part of the Youth Precinct Upgrade, would be subject to Council decision making, future budget considerations and the availability of external funding, Council is very interested in hearing what the community thinks about the opportunity.”

The deadline to provide feedback is 5.00pm on Monday 23 September 2024.
Council has allocated $4 million in the 2024/25 Budget to upgrade the Youth Precinct located in Stow Gardens.
