Thousands of motorists have been sighing in relief since the long awaited roundabout at the corner of Durlacher and Maitland Streets was opened only a few weeks ago.
The identified Black Spot intersection is now safer and easier to navigate for the cyclists, pedestrians and the nearly 9000 vehicles that travel through the intersection every day.
The $1.83million project built by local contractor Red Dust Holdings was completed a couple of weeks ahead of schedule and on budget.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said improving one of the busiest intersections in the CBD was another legacy project Council has completed.
“For more than 15 years this intersection has caused congestion and been the scene of countless near misses and many accidents throughout the years,” he said.
“Thanks to the generous Black Spot Funding contribution of $792,882 from the WA State Government, administered by Mainroads WA and WALGA to build the roundabout, this Council was able to put to bed yet another CBD legacy project.
“I’d also like to thank all the local businesses, organisations, QEII Centre users and the parents and students of St Francis Xavier School for their patience while we were building the intersection.
“The construction was, without a doubt disruptive, but the result has been well worth it.”
