City’s verge mowing program pushes on

Record rainfall has led to an explosion of vegetation growth throughout the Midwest affecting the City of Greater Geraldton’s verge mowing program.

City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim said City staff and contractors were going above and beyond to get the job done as the warmer weather approaches.

“Unlike many other Local Governments around Australia the City prides itself on being able to provide an annual verge mowing service for residents which keeps Greater Geraldton looking neat and tidy as well as mitigating fire risk over the summer months,” he said.

“Our exceptional rainfall that has been wonderful for the region’s wildflowers has meant challenges for our Parks Team who have reported unprecedented growth on the nearly 1640km of verges that must be mowed.

“Having started back in July we anticipate this round of mowing works to be completed by the end of December and we commend our Parks Team and contractors for all their hard work.”

“We would also like to thank the community for their patience whilst we get our town looking top notch again,” added Mr McKim.

The City expects to spend $1.3m this year on verge mowing alone with additional funds allocated for grass maintenance around City buildings, parks and nature reserves as well as major transport corridors including Brand Highway, North West Coastal Highway and Chapman Road that require more frequent attention.

For further information regarding street verges please check out the City’s website.

Those with vacant blocks are reminded that they must be slashed to a maximum height of 7.5cm in preparation for bushfire season before the Friday 4 October deadline, more details can be found on the City’s website.
