State Government funding has been secured to review and update the City of Greater Geraldton’s extensive list of heritage places.

The review will ensure the City continues to take a balanced approach to heritage conservation while encouraging new development.

Grant funding from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage’s (DPLH) Local Government Heritage Consultancy Grants Program will be used to review the list of historical heritage places to ensure their accuracy and consider how the conservation of heritage places through the development approval process is being achieved.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the protection of historic places is important to the community and City.

“The City works closely with landowners and traditional custodians to identify and preserve places that are part of our heritage,” he said.

“Currently, there are nearly 700 historic heritage listings - buildings, homes and places - in our local planning scheme, many of which are deeply cherished by our community.

“We all want our heritage to be protected for future generations while encouraging new development, so we need to ensure our planning processes are efficient and appropriately balanced.”

The DPLH grant contribution of $20,000 and the City’s $30,000 will go towards undertaking the review.

This review falls under the Community pilar in the City’s Strategic Community Plan and reflects the organisation’s commitment to creating a place where people have access to and engage with heritage.
