Geraldton claimed the top honours in Canberra last night in recognition of the City’s commitment to addressing gender inequality and power imbalances to eliminate violence against women and their children.

Presented by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Geraldton was declared the winner in the Addressing Violence against Women and their Children category for the delivery of Active Bystander Training – Speaking Out Against Disrespect to City staff.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune congratulated everyone involved.

“Supporting the prevention of family violence has been a priority for the City since 2019 when Council adopted the Community, Respect, Equality initiative,” he said.

“Integral to this initiative was the implementation of the Active Bystander Training – Speaking out Against Disrespect which now forms part of the City’s Key Services Inductions.

“Since roll out last year the City has conducted 23 face to face sessions successfully training 309 staff members in order to raise awareness about family violence and its impacts.”

“This work is extremely important to the development of a culture and a community grounded in respect, inclusion, and gender equality and I thank all the City staff who continue to deliver this vital initiative,” added Mayor Clune.

Of 175 City staff members surveyed, 87% strongly agreed that the Active Bystander Training was exceptionally beneficial, with 91% acknowledging a substantial enhancement in their understanding of the topic.

The ‘Addressing Violence against Women and their Children’ category of the National Awards for Local Government recognises local government initiatives which address underlying causes of gender inequality and power imbalances to eliminate violence against women and their children, support and advocate for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence and sexual harassment and raise awareness and create cultures as well as communities of respect, inclusion and gender equality.
