Road safety, improved traffic management, renewing aged roads and increasing accessibility across the region remain top priorities in the 2024/25 Budget.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said this year’s Capital Works Plan continues to deliver core business whilst planning for the future.

“Maintaining our largest assets, roads and footpaths, will always be a priority and this year the nearly 60-year-old Nangetty-Walkaway Bridge will be replaced,” he said.

“This year we will have a modest reduction in the volume of Capital Works projects due to a larger than usual backlog of carry forward projects resulting from long lead times and resourcing challenges.

“Although we are allowing for completion of the carry forward projects to avoid future backlogs, we’ve still kept an eye on the future and have included a number of critically important projects in the Budget that ensure community safety and needs are met.”

A business case for a multi deck car park in the CBD will be developed to ensure parking is still available in the City Centre should the development of the Batavia Coast Marina Stage 2, located behind the former railway station come to fruition.

Detailed designs for improvements to the road network around the Maitland Park Schools Precinct that will reduce congestion and improve safety will also be completed.

Over the coming 12 months, $12.3 million is allocated in the Budget to repair and maintain 25.85kms of sealed roads, to re-sheet 55.2kms of unsealed roads including the resurfacing of four rural road intersections and renewing 50kms of road shoulders and swales.

$2.3million will be allocated to the construction and renewal of nearly 4kms of footpaths.

Mayor Clune said grant funding has also made an important contribution to this year’s renewal program.

“The City always goes the extra mile to leverage our investment and this year we have secured more than $5.6 million in grant funding to help cover the costs of critical renewal projects,” he said.

$4.2million in grant funding from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program and Main Roads WA has been secured for the construction of the Nangetty-Walkaway Bridge.

Main Roads WA Regional Road Group Funding Scheme will cover over 66% of the $4.4 million allocated towards the rehabilitation and resurfacing of Place, Flores, Goulds and Nangetty-Walkaway Roads.

$250,000 in Blackspot funding has also been secured for the design of a roundabout at the intersection of Flores and Eastward Roads and to redesign the Pass Street, Rifle Range Road and Eastward Road roundabout.
