Council has extended a lifeline to the Aquarena Outdoor Pool by approving major renewal works to the repair the pool structure and its associated infrastructure.
According to a recently conducted assessment, the pool which was built in 1970, has reached its expected end of life.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the $2.2 million investment over the next two financial years is possible due to asset management improvements and a surplus budget.
“Our City’s vastly improved asset management processes, and our returning the budget to surplus means we are now well positioned to take actions to prevent larger and more costly repairs as a result of taking assets to total failure,” he said.
“The Aquarena is one of the City’s most visited facilities with over 200,000 entries annually and these repairs will enable community use of the Outdoor Pool for another 20 years.”
Over the past 49 years the Outdoor Pool has improved community safety and wellbeing with thousands of children having learned to swim in the pool and people from all over the region simply enjoying the health benefits of swimming on a daily basis.
Various swimming groups, sports clubs and dive schools also use the Outdoor Pool for training and competitions and it’s also become a popular venue for school carnivals.
Council has agreed to provide $200,000 in the 2019/20 Budget to complete detailed planning and design works and $2,080,000 in the 2020/21 Budget to undertake the required major repairs to the Outdoor Pool.
