Longevity of the Aquarena outdoor pool has been secured after the State Government announced $750,000 in funding for the project.

As part of the State Government Community Sporting & Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), the outdoor pool will receive remedial works which will add a further 20 year service life to the pool.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the announcement was a huge win for the community.

“This funding is absolutely critical for the sustainability of one of the community’s most loved and used facilities,” he said.

“From sporting groups, schools, general recreation users and even state-wide sporting events, the pool is used by thousands every year.

“Not only is this significant for our local user groups, but it’s important we ensure the upkeep of this facility as it has positive impacts on our tourism and economy with an increase in sporting events in the region.

“We thank the State Government for giving us the opportunity to keep this community facility thriving.”

Works to the 50m pool include renewal of the pool structure and its associated buried pipe hydraulic and filtration systems.

Undertaking this renewal will provide a further 20 year service life to the pool. The City applied for $1 million in funding as part of the $2.28 million project and has been awarded $750,000.

Council reaffirmed their support for the newest CSRFF round in August this year, which included funding for Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and Geraldton Hockey Association (GHA).

CSRFF grants are available as one-third funding contributions from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries with the remaining two-thirds of project costs equally shared by the applicant and the City.

Works on the outdoor pool are anticipated to commence in winter 2021.
