Olive Street Reserve will welcome seven new homes set to assist with the national housing shortage, and the State Government have thrown in their support with a $1.6 million investment.
The new houses are on freehold land owned by the City of Greater Geraldton and will be made available to the Government Regional Officers Housing Program (GROH).
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the new builds would attract and retain key workers to the region.
“International events have resulted in the current housing crisis and we’re addressing the challenge with these seven homes at Olive Street Reserve,” he explained.
“We’re pleased to partner with the State Government and bring more police officers, teachers, doctors as well as allied health professionals to the Midwest.
“Attracting and retaining these skillsets are critical to seeing our community thrive and we look forward to commencing the builds in 2025.”
The $5.9 million project is shared between the City of Greater Geraldton and State Government, with each house costing $770K. The Olive Street Housing Project also uses the remaining funds from the revitalisation of the Beresford Foreshore, which was funded through Royalties for Regions.
GROH has an extensive waitlist, which exceeds the supply locally.
The seven homes will help make more places available to live and are situated just minutes from the Geraldton CBD.
“I strongly acknowledge that building residential houses is not a service or responsibility of local government but we’re taking on a leadership role in this challenging time,” Mayor Clune finished.
More information about when construction commences will be announced in the new year.
