Geraldton’s premier tourist attraction the HMAS Sydney II Memorial will welcome the return of Warden Peter (Spike) Jones and Deputy Warden Warren Nathan following Council reaffirming their terms for a further two years.

Both appointments were made in 2022 following the departure of longstanding Warden Don Rolston.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune praised the decision and commended both gentlemen.

“Spike and Warren are dedicated Wardens who have gone above and beyond for the HMAS Sydney II Memorial,” he said.

“Because of this, as well as outstanding feedback from our stakeholders, we have reappointed their positions and look forward to continuing our work with them.

“HMAS Sydney II Memorial is Geraldton’s #1 tourist destination a large part of which is because of their ongoing service and commitment.”

Returning Warden Jones expressed his appreciation and enthusiasm for the role.

“I have been involved with the HMAS Sydney II Memorial from the very first service back when the site was just a sand dune,” he said.

“The Warden positions provide Deputy Warden Nathan and myself with the opportunity to continue to be of service to the country as well as the City.

“I am proud to continue in this role and carry on the good work of those who came before us.”

The Warden is responsible for assisting the City of Greater Geraldton with the daily care and administration of the Memorial as well as attending to all matters of customs, traditions and protocols for commemorative ceremonies.

Guided tours of the HMAS Sydney II Memorial commence at 10.30am each day and are facilitated by the Geraldton Volunteer Tour Guides
