The bright purple Beam e-scooters will be around for another 24 months following the City of Greater Geraldton Council’s decision to extend the current licence agreement.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the sustainable mode of transport has proven popular with the community and tourists.
“Last month, nearly 2000 people took our hire e-scooter survey and the majority of respondents said they want Council to extend the agreement,” he said.
“They also said e-scooters were fun to ride, added vibrancy to the City and were a great alternative to getting around town.
“Tourists like them too as two thirds of 185,000 trips taken since the 15 month trial began in September 2022 were undertaken by visitors to the City.”
The local economy and environment have also benefitted from hire e-scooters.
“The company provides jobs for residents and the 450,000kms that have been travelled in Geraldton to date have saved 78 tonnes of CO2 emissions,” Mayor Clune added.
Beam’s WA Operations Manager Stuart O’Callaghan said the Geraldton trial had progressed well and will continue to work with the City to address community concerns.
“We are delighted to be contributing to Geraldton’s public transport network for another two years and look forward to continuing to work closely with the City and the local business community to drive positive outcomes for the City,” he said.
“We have met regularly with the City to discuss any community concerns and implement changes for the benefit of both riders and residents and will continue to do so as we continue operations in Geraldton."
In November 2023, the City conducted the Hire e-scooter Community Survey to help inform Council decision making regarding the continued operation of e-scooters on City controlled land.
