Geraldton students came out in force this year with almost 500 entries submitted in the esteemed Randolph Stow Young Writers Awards.
At a ceremony held at Queens Park Theatre last week, 69 finalists were present along with their families and dignitaries to receive the 74 awards.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune congratulated all the students who entered.
"I applaud each and every one of the creative and imaginative young people from the Midwest and Gascoyne who shared their poems and short stories with us" he said.
“These awards are another illustration of how Geraldton Regional Library continues to inspire young people to pursue their passions and aim higher with their writing.”
"I would like to congratulate all those who participated in this year's edition and thank the judges, teachers, organisers, and sponsors for helping to make this event possible."
Meekatharra School of the Air, Northampton District High School, Mullewa's Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Dongara District High School, Nagle Catholic College, Geraldton Senior High School, Morawa Agricultural College and Geraldton Grammar School were among the schools whose students entered.
Established by the Geraldton Regional Library in 1989, the Randolph Stow Young Writers Awards promote creative writing and honour Randolph Stow's literary accomplishments and connections to Geraldton.
This year’s winning entries have been published in a booklet which is for sale at the Geraldton Regional Library.
