The long awaited development of a Youth Centre at the former Club Rockys Gym on Pass Street has received major support from Lotterywest to complete the works.
Support of up to $954,221 will help fund the refurbishment of the building to include a multi-use sports court with spectator area and a create a multi-functional space for activities such as workshops, presentations and meetings.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the City-run centre will create a stronger sense of belonging and connection to community for young people in Geraldton.
“The Geraldton Youth Centre will be a dedicated space and safe environment for younger members of our community to engage in diversionary sports and recreation activities along with training programs,” he said.
“City staff have been running youth programs for years including the popular School Holiday Program and once the centre is open, they will finally have a dedicated facility to host their programs and activities.
“I’d like to thank Lotterywest for their generous grant funding of this long awaited and much needed centre.”
Lara Dalton MLA said she is proud to be able to support programs and activities for young people delivered from a larger multi-functional space.
“I am very pleased to present $954,221 of Lotterywest support for the Youth Centre refurbishment,” she said.
“This is a much needed project, and it will have a significant impact on our Geraldton youth and the broader community, by enabling young people to connect, learn and engage in a refurbished fit-for-purpose space.”
The refurbishment, which will be undertaken by local contractor GBSC, is expected to be completed by June 2025.
