Night time training, games and competitions for softball teams and bowling club members will soon be brighter following the installation of new LED floodlighting at their venues.

The Geraldton Softball Association and the Geraldton Bowling Club have received Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) grant funding to upgrade their existing flood lighting through the Club Night Lights Program (CNLP).

The CNLP grants are offered as a one-third funding contribution from the DLGSC with the remaining two-thirds coming from the City of Greater Geraldton and the sporting group.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the two projects would benefit hundreds of players at two of the oldest sporting clubs in the City.

“Softball has been played in Geraldton for more than 60 years and the Geraldton bowling club has been here for well over a century,” he said.

“The upgrade to the existing infrastructure means the clubs will have adequate lighting for evening training and night games.

“Avoiding the summer heat plays a critical role in the health and safety of players whilst contributing to our City’s strong sporting culture.”

The Geraldton Softball Association will receive $29,419 in grant funding to replace the lighting on the existing 22m tall towers with 16 LED, 250 LUX luminaries. The total project cost is $88,258.

The Geraldton Bowling Club will receive $42,750 in grant funding to replace the existing six poles and lighting with 16 LED, 200 LUX luminaries. The total project cost is $128,250.

For more than a decade, Council has been supporting clubs who are investing in their facilities.

If your club is working towards increasing participation in your particular sport or recreation or is planning for future facility upgrades please contact the City for assistance with the grant application process.
