Construction works to transform the T-intersection at Durlacher and Maitland Street, an identified Black Spot and one of the busiest in the CBD, will begin on Monday 19 October 2020.
To safely facilitate the upgrade, which also includes the construction of a new service road for businesses located at the intersection, a closure of Durlacher Street between Waldeck Street and the west side of the T-intersection is required.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said community safety during construction of the much needed roundabout is paramount.
“Thousands of vehicles travel through this intersection every day along with cyclists and school children on foot so to ensure everyone’s safety the decision was made to close the construction site during the works,” he said.
“We understand this road closure will cause disruption but the good news is the closure won’t affect access to Pizza Hut or Thrifty Car and Truck Hire. The clients and customers of Centacare, St Vinnies and the Family Relationship Centre will be able to access to their carpark from a temporary entrance on Maitland Street.
“Durlacher Street residents with properties located within the road closure will also be able to access their homes.
“We know the road closure is going to be an inconvenience so I am asking for everyone’s patience during the works. The end result will be well worth it.”
To assist some traffic movement in the area a one-way detour for light vehicles only such as cars, utes and motorbikes, will be in place from Durlacher Street to Maitland Street via the QEII carpark.
The following changes to traffic management on Maitland Street will also come into effect on 19 October.
- Maitland Street from Cathedral Avenue to Durlacher Street will be open to local traffic only.
- Access to St Francis Xavier Primary School will still be available via Maitland Street.
- A dedicated, school kiss and drop zone will be located on Maitland Street across from the Bishop’s House.
- The Maitland Street entrance to the QEII carpark will be closed.
To ensure QEII Centre patrons and other facility users have adequate parking during the works the QEII carpark will be reserved for QEII patrons and facility users only. Access to the carpark will be from Durlacher Street only. Additional parking for QEII patrons and other facility users will be available on the grassed area located behind the QEII building. Access to this area is from Durlacher Street.
Construction of the $1.83 million roundabout is jointly funded with the State Government Black Spot Program contributing $622,000 towards the project. The estimated date of completion is early January 2021.
