Geraldton has been commended for its commitment to seniors and awarded the Age Friendly Local Government of Western Australia at the state Seniors Awards.
The award recognises a local government for its innovation and service to senior residents and enhancing opportunities for them to lead full and satisfying lives.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn congratulated everyone involved.
“Since the QEII Seniors and Community Centre opened in 1986, the Centre has grown to accommodate an average of 2,800 monthly participants,” he said.
“Visitors engage in 41 different programs focusing on social, physical and mental wellbeing, which is coordinated by a passionate and dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
“This award recognises all the hard work that has gone into developing and maintaining this facility as a space for everyone in our community.
“This work has been especially valuable during the pandemic when so many have felt isolated,” added Mayor Van Styn.
Council on the Aging (COTA) hosted the awards on behalf of the state government at ANZAC House in Perth yesterday morning.
The QEII Seniors and Community Centre is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4.30pm.
Some of the activities that take place at the Centre include African Drumming Lessons, Balance Gym, Switched on Seniors Computer Classes, Gardening Club, Line Dancing, Pole Walking, Tax Help, Zumba Gold plus much more.
