Electric vehicle charging stations open in CBD

Greater Geraldton has joined Australia’s longest electric vehicle (EV) network following the installation of public charging stations in the CBD.

Two 150kW fast charging EV stations with payment facilities, which can charge up to four vehicles at the same time, have been installed near the entrance to the Francis Street carpark.

Since the opening of the stations less than two weeks ago, more than 70 vehicles have already used them to recharge their batteries on a pay per use basis.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the EV infrastructure, which is 100% State Government funded, gives Geraldton a strategic advantage.

“Electric vehicle ownership is increasing and so are the number of leasing companies offering them as part of their fleet,” he said.

“These vehicles are already travelling around our state and having public charging stations means our City has automatically become an EV destination.

“It’s great to see Geraldton at the forefront of this technology.

“The City has strategically placed the charging stations in the CBD so drivers can stretch their legs and spend some money locally while their vehicles charge.”

The charging stations are part of the State Government’s WA EV network being constructed by Synergy and Horizon Power that will run from Perth to Kununurra, along the southwest coast to Eucla and east to Kalgoorlie which includes 98 charging stations at 49 locations across the State.

EV charging stations are part of the State Electric Vehicle Strategy and part of the State Government's Electric Vehicle Action Plan which is key to boosting EV uptake in WA and helps continue the transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
