Community workshops set to ‘Blitz Boxthorn’

If you have African Boxthorn plants on your property and you want to get rid of them don’t miss out on the City of Greater Geraldton’s free community workshops on how to treat this highly invasive weed.

Originating in South Africa, since its introduction to Australia in the mid-1800s as a hedge plant, it has become one of Australia’s most widespread weeds thriving in Greater Geraldton’s climate and soil conditions.

City of Greater Geraldton Chief Executive Officer Ross McKim said it’s an ongoing challenge to get this particular plant under control.

“These plants spread by seed, suckers and even root or tree pruning fragments that when get left behind or dumped can take root and grow,” he said.

“The plants also produce flowers and fruit from old wood, so pruning is ineffective.

“It’s a hardy plant that can handle drought, salt spray and sand blasting, it grows in partial shade as well as full sun and once established is tolerant to grazing due to its spiny nature.

“African Boxthorn plants displace our native vegetation and have a detrimental impact on our biodiversity, so I encourage community members to come along and learn how to combat this destructive weed,” added McKim.

Workshop participants will learn about African Boxthorn, what the City is doing to combat this Weed of National Significance and gain the skills to treat smaller boxthorn plants using the Boxthorn Blitz kits provided. These kits will be available for participants to take home at the completion of one of the following workshops.
