Telstra’s announcement to cut staff has been met with disappointment by the City of Greater Geraldton as the Midwest continues to face numerous and ongoing telecommunication difficulties.

Up to 2,800 staff are set to lose their jobs at Telstra as part of cost cutting measures by the telecommunication giant.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune expressed his frustration with Telstra’s announcement.

“In good faith we have recently participated in Federal and State telecommunications reviews and before these are even finalised, Telstra have announced a large reduction in staffing numbers,” he said.

“When the system fails, our community try to contact Telstra and when that fails, they reach out to Council to see if we can use our contacts to get them help.

“Currently there are many communication dead spots already hampering development in the Midwest, one can only assume this situation will worsen with Telstra letting go of almost 9% of its workforce.”

“My thoughts are with both those employees who are losing their jobs and with those who will remain at Telstra facing the stress of operating under reduced capacity,” added Mayor Clune.

Communications in the City of Greater Geraldton and the Midwest have been severely impacted in in recent years by natural disasters most notably ex-Tropical Cyclone Seroja which resulted in a week-long period of no telecommunications.

The City calls on Telstra to reconsider their decision in light of the negative impact the impending job losses will have on regional and remote Australia.
