It is with great sadness the City of Greater Geraldton, its staff, Councillors and community, pay tribute to former Mayor, Mr Phillip Cooper.

As one of the City’s most memorable and longest standing Councillors, Mr Cooper’s time as an elected member spanned more than 30 years.

After becoming a Councillor in 1963, Mr Cooper served as Mayor of the Town of Geraldton between 1982 - 1988 then Mayor of the City of Geraldton from 1994 - 2001, as well as fulfilling the post of Deputy Mayor at times during his tenure in public office.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn paid his respect to Mr Cooper, describing him as one of Geraldton’s most iconic leaders.

“On behalf of the Geraldton community, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Mr Cooper’s family and friends on the passing of one of our most committed, hard-working and passionate elected members,” he said.

“It goes without saying that Phil was one of the most stand-out Mayor’s in our history, remaining dedicated to our community right up until his passing.

“Phil made a huge contribution to our community and Council especially during our formative years, and the legacy of his leadership is still felt today.

“He will be long remembered in our community for his kindness, humility and dedication that will certainly not be forgotten.”

In recognition of his 32 years in local government Mr Cooper was named a Freeman of the City in 2001.

He was also pivotal during some of Geraldton’s biggest formative projects including the initial works to remove the old railway line to open up Foreshore Drive, the inception of the Regional Library and the building of the Aquarena.

Mr Cooper was no stranger to the Royals, meeting Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip when they visited Geraldton and officially opened the Geraldton Civic Centre in 1963. As well as accompanying Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Geraldton in April 1988 when Geraldton attained City status.

Known for his dedication to the community, Mr Cooper was also a widely respected businessman and involved in many local clubs and organisations.

He remained an active member of many City events including swearing in of new Councillors and will always be remembered fondly by the people of Geraldton.
